Auto-Tune 7 in Detail: Per-Object Throat Length
Up close and personal with Auto-Tune 7's new note-by-note throat length adjustment

Auto-Tune 7 Welcome to the latest in our more in-depth looks at the key new capabilities in Auto-Tune 7. Last time, we looked at Auto-Tune 7's Graphical Mode MIDI functions. This time we'll be taking a closer look at Auto-Tune 7's new note-by-note throat length adjustment.

Throat Modeling

Throat Length Control Auto-Tune 7's throat modeling is a streamlined version of the technology from our preposterously powerful THROAT Evo Physical Modeling Vocal Designer. Briefly, the shape of a singer's throat is a prime contributor to their vocal character. Auto-Tune throat modeling lets you modify the vocal quality of a performance by actually varying the geometry of a physical model of the human vocal tract and processing the original performance through that model.

Throat Length Control Auto-Tune's Throat Length control lets you modify the length of the modeled throat over the entire vocal track. Values above 100 represent a lengthening of the throat while values below 100 represent a shortening of the throat. In addition to simply changing vocal timbre, increasing throat length is useful when the original performance is female and you want to transpose it down and have it sound more male. Conversely, decreasing throat length is useful when the original input is male and you want to transpose it up and have it sound female or childlike.

Throat Length Control One important thing to keep in mind is that while this control gives you the ability to radically change the throat length, the variation in the length of human vocal tracts is rarely more than about 20% in either direction. If you are looking for a "realistic" vocal characteristic, start with modest settings of this control. More extreme settings can produce dramatic results, but probably not what anyone would call "realistic."

Throat Length Adjust Control While global throat modeling was first introduced in Auto-Tune Evo, Auto-Tune 7 takes it to the next level with the addition of the new Throat Length Adjust control. Throat Length Adjust lets you independently set the throat length of each individual correction object (Curve, Line or Note). While the overall Throat Length for your track is still set by the master Throat Length control, each correction object can have its own independent adjustment (either longer or shorter) as desired.

Throat Length Adjust can be used for subtle timbral adjustments to individual notes, or radical changes for dramatic special effects. Either way, Throat Length Adjust, together with Auto-Tune 7's new time manipulation features and note-by-note control of Retune Speed and Vibrato Depth, give you comprehensive control over every element of every note of your vocal. All with an easy-to-use interface that lets you concentrate on your creativity.
