+ Auto-Tune Hits the Big

TIME Magazine features a major story on Auto-Tune's impact on popular music

As many of you no doubt remember (because you all read every one of our newsletters, right?), a few months ago we looked at the some of the unprecedented attention Auto-Tune was receiving in the mainstream media (e.g., The New Yorker, The Washington Post, NPR, etc.) as a result of the near ubiquity of Auto-Tune pitch correction and the Auto-Tune Vocal Effect in contemporary pop music.

This week, that attention makes its way to what is arguably the USA's prime purveyor of weekly mainstream news, TIME Magazine. Featured in the current (February 16th) issue is an extensive article by TIME's assistant managing editor and music critic, Josh Tyrangiel. Featuring quotes from interviews with producer Rick Rubin, and our own inimitable Dr. Andy, the article provides yet another perspective on why Auto-Tune has become what is probably popular culture's single most well-known piece of music production technology.

You can read the article here.

In addition to the magazine story, TIME and Tyrangiel have produced a podcast that combines the information from the article with musical examples from artists like Cher, Kanye West, and more. You can download the podcast from the iTunes Music Store or download or listen to an mp3 version here.
