The 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards are just around the corner and we’re speaking one-on-one with a few of the talents who have relied on Auto-Tune to help create the sounds and songs that have moved us all.  Check out this interview with the award-winning producer Kuk Harrell who is nominated for two 2022 Grammys: Album Of The Year (Lil Nas X) and Best Dance Recording (Dave Guetta, Afrojack, Lux Thai).

“I’m a vocal producer and I’ve had the privilege of working with artists like Rihanna, Bieber, Cher, Sting, Lil Nas X, and the list goes on and on and I’m so stoked to be able to say that.” – Kuk Harrell

Kuk Harrell Is Nominated For:

Album Of The Year  Montero by Lil Nas X

Best Dance/Electronic Recording Hero – Afrojack & David Guetta

Tell us about this year’s GRAMMYS.

Kuk: So this year, I’m so fortunate, I’m up for two GRAMMYS. One for Album Of The Year (Lil Nas X) and the other GRAMMY I’m up for is Best Dance Record with David Guetta, Afrojack, and the artists that sang that is Lux; her name is Luxtides.

What role did Auto-Tune play in your success?

Kuk: So, how Auto-Tune plays into the song ‘Hero’, which is up for Best Dance Recording. It’s a really simple thing because Auto-Tune is always a part of every single session that I do. Because it’s a part of the sound, it’s a part of our culture right no matter how you feel about it.

“We captured magic and now we’re up for a GRAMMY.” – Kuk Harrell

How was it working with Take A Daytrip?

KukI’m so fortunate that I got to work with Take A Daytrip—this was my first time working with them— and how Auto-Tune played into that session and all of those sessions was very easy because that’s what, you know, it’s the platform and that’s what they use.

KukSometimes I would go—based on the sound that I wanted on the particular records—I would go between Auto-Tune Pro or (Auto-Tune) EFX+ depending on the sound and how tight I wanted it to be. That’s how we came to all of Lil Nas X’s records and how Auto-Tune played into those.

What does being nominated for a GRAMMY mean to you?

Kuk: Being nominated for a GRAMMY, and winning GRAMMYS….What it does is it solidifies the work that we do sitting in this room for hours and hours and hours. We figured out some kind of way to crack the code to be able to create something that tickles people’s ear, continuously, whether it be songwriting or vocal production.

Stream the GRAMMYS live and on demand at Paramount+ from 8–11:30 p.m. ET / 5–8:30 p.m. PT.
