A mic locker stuffed with retro rarities and modern must-haves is the dream of every producer. But building one up can conflict with other musical priorities such as eating and living indoors. Mic Mod to the rescue! This straightforward plug-in from Antares makes the mics you own sound like the mics you aspire to own, and accomplished audio engineer, musician, and producer Josh Carney is here to show you just how easy it is to use.
Mic Mod Tutorial
In this video tutorial, Josh showcases how Mic Mod’s state-of-the art modeling technology reproduces the character and frequency response of coveted studio microphones. He begins with a simple vocal recorded into a $99 AKG® Perception mic. By simply selecting that unit from Mic Mod’s extensive menu of source mics, Josh is able to transform it into the studio-standard (and pricey) Neumann® U87 as the modeled mic. Josh switches to a classic Telefunken U47 tube microphone and switches between it and bypassing Mic Mod. The difference is NOT subtle!
Josh then demonstrates Mic Mod’s input and output gain faders, how its Tube Saturation parameter adds absolutely authentic vacuum tube warmth from subtle to dramatic, and how the Proximity controls for the source and modeled mics can compensate for singing too close to the mic. Mic Mod also features low cut and polar pattern settings that always match those available on the source and modeled mics.
Mic Mod is also very effective on instruments, for which Josh chooses a model of the $6,300 AKG C12 VR on his acoustic guitar. He finishes off by playing the entire track with and without Mic Mod, and again, the sound comes alive in a way that you don’t have to be a “golden ears” to hear.
