Live From New York, It’s CharliXCX and Auto-Tune!
Charli appeared on Saturday Night Live over the weekend– doubling as both host and musical guest, and riding the tailwind of her culture-defining album BRAT. A notable feature of her opening monologue, though, came at about a minute and a half, when she credits “someone who has been there for me my entire career: Auto-Tune”. She added, “Auto-Tune makes everything sound better.”
Auto-Tune is a crucial tool in the success of countless careers. Where Charli is different, though, is that she’s public about Auto-Tune’s role in her creative process. Just a few months ago, she appeared on the music tech podcast, “Tape Notes,” where she became notorious for saying, “I drink, I smoke, and I use Auto-Tune,” when describing her songwriting methodology.
Auto-Tune is more than just a piece of software to Charli. Like many megastars that have come before her, she views Auto-Tune as a muse– a source of inspiration and creative motivation that helps shape her musical vision.
BRAT debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart, selling 82,000 copies its first week. Since its release, BRAT has garnered over 1.2 billion (with a ‘b’) streams across all platforms, smashing her previous releases and cementing itself as a pop culture force of nature. She is running for 7 awards at the next Grammy ceremony and has redefined the word "Brat" for an entire generation.
