Pitch correction has been on nearly every commercially released vocal since the late 1990s. Most of that processing is invisible — listeners hear a confident, in-tune performance and never think about what's happening underneath it. Then there's the other version: the hard mechanical snap on every note, the quantized vocal that doesn't pretend to be natural, the sound that's defined melodic rap and pop since T-Pain made it impossible to ignore in 2007. Both come from the same plugin. The only difference is one setting.


At retune speed 25–50 with Flex-Tune on, AutoTune 2026 disappears into the performance. The correction is there, working at 2.5ms latency, and nobody in the room knows it. Drop retune speed to 0–10, turn Flex-Tune off, and the algorithm stops hiding — every pitch snaps hard to the nearest scale tone the moment it resolves, and that snap is the sound. Invisible or unavoidable. It's the same control either way.

What is pitch correction and how does it work?

Pitch correction detects the fundamental frequency of a vocal and shifts it toward the nearest note in a target scale — automatically, in real time.


The plugin analyzes incoming audio and identifies the fundamental frequency of the note being sung — pitch detection, happening in near real time. It compares that detected pitch against a target scale: the set of correct notes defined by the key and scale you’ve set. If the singer hit a C# when the scale calls for a C, the plugin shifts the pitch toward the nearest correct note. How quickly that happens is controlled by the Retune Speed parameter.


Pitch correction was invented by Dr. Andy Hildebrand at Antares Audio Technologies and released commercially in 1997 as AutoTune. Before that, fixing a pitch problem meant punching in a new take or manually editing audio — time-consuming, expensive, and rarely seamless. Pitch correction changed all of that: fast, repeatable, and available to any producer with a computer.

Where should pitch correction sit in the signal chain?

Pitch correction should run early in the signal chain, on a clean, dry, uncompressed signal — before EQ, compression, reverb, and effects.


Pitch detection needs a clean signal to work with. Background noise, heavy reverb, aggressive compression, or a heavily processed input can cause the algorithm to lose tracking on quiet passages, produce glitchy artifacts, or correct inconsistently. Raw vocal in, pitch detection working from a clean source — that’s when the plugin does its best work.


This holds whether you’re going for transparent correction or the hard-tuned effect. The delay and reverb at the end of a trap vocal chain are feeding a pitch-corrected signal, not a raw one — that’s what keeps the delay throws consistent and the effect sounding deliberate rather than unstable.

What are the most important pitch correction settings?

Four parameters control most of what pitch correction does: key and scale, retune speed, Flex-Tune, and Humanize. Retune speed is the most consequential.

Key and Scale

Set the key and scale before anything else. This tells the plugin which notes are correct and which need correction. An incorrect key setting moves notes to the wrong target pitch, producing results that sound worse than the original performance. One situation that trips up even experienced producers: a detuned beat. Retune Speed

At 25–50ms, the algorithm nudges pitch gradually toward center, which reads as natural support. At 80ms or above, the correction is slow enough to have minimal effect on typical vocal movement. Flex-Tune

Flex-Tune lets notes close to correct pitch pass through with less correction, while notes further off-pitch receive more aggressive treatment. It preserves natural pitch expressiveness — slides, bends, vibrato — while still catching the moments that actually need fixing. For transparent correction, Flex-Tune on is almost always the right call.

Humanize

Humanize relaxes correction on sustained notes specifically, to preserve vibrato and the natural pitch drift that makes a long-held note feel alive rather than static. With Humanize at zero and retune speed fast, every moment of the vocal gets pulled hard to pitch — including the held notes where expressiveness lives. Raise Humanize and those notes breathe.

What’s the difference between transparent correction and the AutoTune effect?

Transparent correction and the AutoTune effect are the same technology configured at opposite ends of the retune speed scale.


For transparent correction — the goal on most pop, R&B, country, and rock records — set retune speed to 20–80ms, enable Flex-Tune, and set Humanize to a moderate value. The listener should hear a confident, in-tune performance. The plugin is invisible.


The AutoTune effect runs at retune speed 0–10ms, Flex-Tune off, Humanize at zero. Every pitch transition snaps hard to the nearest scale tone. Every held note clamps to pitch center. That mechanical, hard-quantized quality is the effect — the sound T-Pain built a career on in 2007 and that melodic trap has run ever since. It’s a deliberate creative choice, not a misconfiguration.


Most working melodic rap sits somewhere between the two. Retune speed 15–25ms gives a vocal that has the pitched, processed quality of the genre without the full quantized snap of zero retune — audible enough that you know something is happening, restrained enough that the vocal still moves. Which zone you’re in determines every other setting decision.

What’s the difference between Auto Mode and Graph Mode?

Auto Mode corrects in real time as the vocal plays. Graph Mode gives manual control over individual note positions after the fact.


Auto Mode is what you’ll use the majority of the time. Set your key, scale, and retune speed, and the plugin corrects in real time as the vocal plays — nothing else to configure. Tracking sessions, live performance, standard studio work: it handles all of it.


Graph Mode is where you go when you need to get in and move things by hand. It gives you a piano roll view of every note the pitch detector resolved — exact pitch of each syllable, plotted over time. You can drag notes to precise positions, reshape pitch curves, or lock specific notes to exact pitch centers. Detailed post-production repair, building a melodic line from a take that didn’t quite get there, note-by-note composition at the editing stage.

What are the most common pitch correction mistakes?

The most common pitch correction mistake is correcting to the wrong key — the plugin moves notes toward the nearest target pitch regardless of whether that pitch is right for the track. Set the key wrong and every correction is wrong, in a way that's often harder to identify than a flat note because the result sounds confidently off rather than obviously broken.
