What is AutoTune?

AutoTune (Antares) has spent more than 30 years chasing a single idea: that the most powerful instrument ever made is the one you were born with. No plugin, no studio trick, no piece of gear matters more than what a person can do with their own voice — and everything we build exists to set that voice free, turning the performance you hear in your head into the one coming out of the speakers.

When was AutoTune invented?

AutoTune was first released in 1997 by Dr. Andy Hildebrand. Long before he made music software, Hildebrand was an engineer who used digital signal processing to read seismic data for the oil industry — sending sound waves down through the earth and interpreting what came back to find what was buried below. A trained flutist, he eventually traded that world for music and founded Antares. The breakthrough came from a passing joke, when a friend wished aloud for something that could keep her singing in tune. Hildebrand realized the same techniques he'd used to map oil fields could track and correct the pitch of a human voice — and AutoTune was born.

In 1998, Cher's "Believe" put an entirely new sound on the radio. The "AutoTune Effect" became the most recognizable vocal in recorded music, and it never left. From Cher and T-Pain to Bon Iver, Imogen Heap, Charli XCX, and Post Malone, the artists who defined modern vocals got there with AutoTune — still the only authentic way to get that sound. Today AutoTune Pro is the industry standard for automatic and transparent pitch correction. It's the tool the world's biggest artists reach for to land a flawless take, whether the effect is something you notice or something you'd never know was there.

What is the next era of AutoTune?

Pitch correction was only the beginning. AutoTune now makes a full set of AI-powered vocal mixing tools for everything that happens after the take. Vocal Prep, our newest, readies a raw recording. Vocal EQ, Vocal De-Esser, Vocal Compressor, and Vocal Reverb then shape, smooth, and place a voice in the mix.

From there, things get more adventurous. Our creative vocal effects turn a voice into something it wasn't before. Harmony Engine spins a single line into rich, real-time harmonies. EFX+ pairs iconic pitch correction with modular vocal effects you can stack and reshape on the fly. And Metamorph is our ethically sourced AI voice changer — the tool that can turn one voice into another entirely.

And we're just getting started. Every tool we build comes back to a single promise: Unlock your voice. Bring us the performance only you can give, and we'll help you get that sound. Thanks for letting us into the music you make.

I literally love Antares software. For me, the first take is almost always the best. Being able to focus on performance rather than technique really helps me capture the moment.

I’ve had a reinvigoration of using the voice in new ways with the EFX+ plug-in. It’s a fast, easy, expansive way to do things with vocals that weren’t really possible before.
